60TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE INTERGOVERNMENTAL OCEANOGRAPHIC COMMISSION AND LAUNCH OF THE GLOBAL OCEAN SCIENCE REPORT 2020

UNESCO's Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) celebrates its 60th anniversary in 2020. The Commission was created within UNESCO to promote coordinated international research on the world ocean and its various basins, based on the pioneering experiences of the International Geophysical Year (1957-58) and the first International Expedition to the Indian Ocean. Over the past decades, the IOC has advanced science and its applications to support sustainable economic and social progress, the foundation for peace among nations, and sustainable development. While there have been advances on many fronts and numerous successes, the IOC's mission is always so necessary and urgent in the face of the continuing deterioration of the health of the oceans and in the midst of a planetary crisis. The 60th anniversary of the IOC is an opportunity to take stock of what has been achieved and look forward to a United Nations Decade of Ocean Sciences for Sustainable Development (2021-2030) full of challenges and opportunities.
